It’s funny, but when asked about things learnt that have served to be the greatest contribution to their lives most people will not mention anything from school days. Have you noticed this? I can say that the things I have learnt which have served as a platform for personal growth did not come from the classroom.

Basically, the education system with its tunnel-minded curriculum frequently taught by blinkered, know-it-all academics, having fallen for the “I’m an expert” trap, is designed to programme young people to fit into boxes: work for corporations (and suchlike) when they graduate. Back in the 70s, during my grammar school years, I vividly remember a disturbing incident. I was in the school office when I heard the male principal screaming at a student behind a closed door. I don’t know what the student had done to be on the receiving end of such a rant, but I do remember my heart racing and a feeling of terror that the anger would somehow be turned toward me.

Needless to say, I high-tailed it out of that office as quickly as possible, relieved to have escaped. The thing is, this scenario was considered utterly ‘normal’. Thankfully, corporeal punishment wasn’t practiced in my school, which would have been far more terrifying.
